I am working on a special First Holy Communion portrait package, and took some practice shots this afternoon. I used my backdrops since it is still far too cold to venture outside. These were taken with misbehaving on/off camera flashes, and natural light.

My street after the sun came out, the evening of February 6th. That was a gorgeous, luscious snow, with feathery flakes that fell slowly out of the sky, coating everything with their loveliness.

Just a black backdrop, natural light, and three reluctant models wearing white tee shirts.



He has such an expressive little face! I am very partial to his eyebrows.


She likes to give me those Mona Lisa smiles, small and subtle.



My oldest is in a leg cast and has been very unhappy about that this week - in part due to pain, in part due to not being able to play in the snow, in part due to the inconvenience of only having one good leg. But he managed a smile for me anyway...

So I entered a few more prints in the Loudoun County Photo Club Photography Competition (the three above). The theme was "Complementary Colors" (red/green; blue/orange; yellow/purple), which was quite a challenge for me, as I usually think in terms of a subject, rather than a concept, when I am behind the camera.

But I had a lot of fun, thinking about photography from the perspective of a concept. Usually I stumble across the concept when I am going through my images, like this one, from a series I took at the Jersey Shore, which is one of my favorites:



It just says "Solitude" to me. But what if I took my camera one day, and went to a park with the sole purpose of photographing "Solitude"? What would I come up with? It's an interesting idea.

In the winter, it is so easy to stay nestled in the warmth of one's home. Yesterday I dragged my family out for a short hike. The paths were wet and soggy, there was ice on the pond, it was grey and overcast, but we still had a good time.

I had the pleasure of making maternity portraits for this beautiful couple, and it was such a treat to meet little Joshua last week. He was two weeks old, and absolutely precious.I love how smushed he is - it reminds me so much of my own children!

These two girls were simply stunning. Vibrant and energetic, and so easy to photograph!

They were such troopers, schlepping around in the ice and snow, but I think these photographs were worth it! Don't you agree?

So beautiful today! It's been snowing since 9 am this morning! I grabbed my camera and took a few photographs in my yard...everything looks magical in the snow.
